Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).

What is counseling?

Counseling is an opportunity to talk confidentially with a trained professional who can help you learn new coping skills and strategies to solve personal problems. Counseling also involves discovering new aspects of yourself and your life.

Some people benefit from four or five sessions of problem-solving, while some issues may warrant further counseling sessions. Although counselors may differ somewhat in their therapeutic approaches, there are certain similarities that characterize counseling. In the beginning stage of counseling, your counselor will ask about your concerns to gain a deeper understanding of you. As counseling proceeds, trust between you and your counselor builds and a working partnership is developed. The counselor will help you to explore your feelings, make decisions, and resolve your concerns.

  • Identifying concerns and understanding how they are affecting your life.
  • Exploring possibilities or new ways to deal with the concerns.
  • Recognize patterns and cycles and ways of intervening.
  • Developing strategies and options for your relationships.
  • Recognizing and acting on goals, dreams, hopes and expectations that you hold for your life.
  • Recognizing unhealthy behaviors or mindsets to find new ways to handle uncomfortable situations.
